Picture

Tracking the inbound Comet ZTF from April to December of 2022.
Developing a longer tail.
Continuing its trek around the sun.
Close-up of the coma and tail showing the extreme green color and structure within the tail.
Green coma, yellow dust tail, and a long bluish ion tail now forming as ZTF begins its approach to earth!
Beautiful colors in a rich starfield make for an interesting image.
This interesting image reveals what astronomers call a disconnection event, essentially a weakening in the comet's signature tail, which makes it look as if the tail is breaking off.
Magnificent colors and details are beginning to show as the comet comes closer to earth.
The fantastic splendor of this comet reveals itself in this long exposure.
The comet is passing some interesting nebulas and galaxies during its travels across our skies.
Another disconnection event due to space weather from our Sun.
In this short exposure, we see the inner detail of the coma and the beginnings of an anti-tail. Notice the edge on galaxy at the top right.
A strong anti-tail begins to emerge as the bizarre third tail is made up of the same components as the other tails of the comet but is not a part of it. Rather, it is only an optical illusion caused by earth as it moves through the orbital plane of the comet.
Comet continues to approach earth at a staggering 129,600 MPH!
Awesome detail in the greenish coma and tails.
Beautiful stars surround our visitor from deep space.
Intense detail and colors adorn this comet in every aspect!
An amazing sight to behold! Multi-colored stars, several galaxies, and ZTF complete this remarkable image.
The anti-tail and now two tails trailing the comet are clearly visible in this image.
Ghostly blue, green, and a hint of purple are visible in this detailed exposure. Note the comet's passing of an edge-on galaxy at the 3 o'clock position!
Another beautiful night of photographing Comet ZTF.
Losing the angle to see the anti-tail, Comet ZTF now sports a tail some 10 million miles long! That's 1,263 earths lined up next to each other.
Now passing some interesting galaxies.
The comet is just days from crossing our orbit.
Image of Comet ZTF just 5 hours from its closest approach to earth. Seen here, from some 27 million miles away, we can now see this amazing view of the comet directly edge on from our line of sight!
Sequence of images over time showing the comet's approach towards Earth.
Multiple images, over 11 days, revealing Comet ZTF's final days until reaching the Earth's vicinity.
Taken on Feb 6th, this image shows Comet ZTF's tail facing the other way because the Earth has passed the comet in our journey around the Sun. In a moment of amazing chance, at 31 million miles from Earth, these two comets, from our point of view, aligned almost together! Comet ZTF - meet Comet Atlas!
Comet Atlas has moved on from ZTF, passing in front of IC 405, (The Flame Nebula), and is headed towards the outer Solar System.
The comet is now leaving behind the nebulas IC 410 & IC 405, and heading towards its next rendezvous - Mars!
Over the course of three days, we see the progress of Comet ZTF and the march towards the planet Mars (The bright yellowish-orange light on the bottom right).
This night on February 10th, marks the closest approach to the planet Mars and is even giving the illusion of pointing at where Mars is in this photograph!
Comet Atlas is now in the same frame as the nebula IC 410, (The Tadpoles), and is showing quite the large green coma but no tail.
Seems fitting to say goodbye as Comet ZTF travels southward passing the bright star Aldebaran and the Hyades Cluster of beautiful stars! The comet is currently 117 million miles from our Sun and 56 million miles from Earth.
Roughly one month past Comet ZTF's closest approach to Earth, we take a parting look at this wonderful space wanderer. Now some 95 million miles from us, the comet still exhibits the huge greenish coma, however, the tail has diminished significantly and is hardly noticeable at the 8 o'clock position.
